Short Mat Bowls

Short Mat Bowls

DILTON MARSH SHORT MAT BOWLS CLUB

BACKGROUND
Short Mat Bowls was first introduced to Dilton Marsh by the Womens Institute, who had a "sports taster session". Following that introduction, a group of villagers met up, formed a Committee, sorted out a grant and purchased the basic equipment to commence play. The Club has been meeting regularly since then (1990), and currently boasts 14 members, the majority of whom have their own bowls (woods). Club bowls are still in good condition and available to borrow for visitors to any session. We actively encourage participation.

The game is played to basically the same rules and regulations as indoor bowls, but tailored to suit village and community halls so that a permanent green is not required; instead, a long green mat is marked out as the "rink" with a central obstacle (length of wood) to make it more competitive, and at the end of each session the mat rolls up to be stored away until the next session. We are affiliated to the Wiltshire Short Mat Bowls Association and are able to call upon them for tuition or other advice when required. They arrange county and coutrywide matches, and can even give tips on holding friendly games.

MEETINGS
Dilton Marsh Short Mat Bowls Club meets twice weekly (since Sept. 2000): Tuesday evenings 7.30pm to 9.30pm, and Wednesday afternoons 2.00pm to 4.00pm at Dilton Memorial Hall. The first session is free of charge, thereafter only £1.50 per session for adults and half price for under 16s. Our annual membership fee of only £5.00 enables our players to compete at various competitions and other events during the year.

We are open all year round and throughout school holidays, and all ages are welcome.
